[Henry Tonoyan] has started getting into OpenCV and digital control system projects. He needed a decent webcam that could do higher than standard frame rates. As it turns out, the PS3 Eye is actually a pretty capable little camera. Now that it’s kind of obsolete, you can have it for as little as $7 from places like Amazon!
There are a number of companies that make webcams for computers, but PlayStation 3 owners who have the PS3 EyeToy have the advantage of a webcam that includes motion-sensing technology. The PS3 EyeToy camera can be used on a computer, provided that special drivers have been installed. The Sony PlayStation Eye is a digital camera just like a webcam designed for Sony PlayStation 3. Sony PlayStation 3 Eye Camera This technology uses computer vision and gesture recognition in processing the images taken by the camera. Recently I bought a second-hand PS3 Eye camera. It's a webcam with a high-quality onboard microphone, which on the day of purchase I was able to use to record 1 hour and 40 minutes of commentary on a PC without any problems during the recording session (I had difficulty beforehand.
The PS3 Eye has a standard USB interface, and after messing around with it a bit in Linux, [Henry] was able to adjust the frame rate settings for his application. He’s using a library called video for Linux with an application called qv4L2. Wish you were here flash mob ireland. It’s capable of 60fps at VGA, which we admit isn’t amazing, but at $7, we can’t complain — if you drop down to QVGA (320×240) you can go up to 120fps.
From there you can play around in OpenCV to your heart’s content.
Seeing as the Eye has been out for over 7 years now, it has been used in quite a few hacks since then. From an actual eyeball tracker (seriously), to an interactive projection globe with touch tracking to even a physical tower defense game.
Ps3 Eye Als Webcam
The NUI Group has been working hard to bring the PS3 Eye to windows. From the factory, this device has pretty impressive specs, but no windows drivers. After a bit of hacking, they’ve developed a driver for it and released it on their forums. The main reason they are so interested in it is that it can capture full frame at 60 frames per second, making it perfect for multi touch sensing. Now that they’ve got it working with windows, they’re working on a custom PS3 Eye filter for touchlib.
